Whew. Big Sigh of Relief.

At last sight, Bambi was fine.  Apparently.

When I got home Friday (half-dreading what I would find), all that was left of my hammock was a few shreds wrapped around a tree and there was no deer to be found (and also, thankfully, no blood).  I wondered how everything played out but had resigned myself to not knowing… until TBear talked to the neighbor.  Apparently he (neighbor) was around (lurking? scary, since you can’t see our house from his…) when Animal Control came to the house to deal with the deer issue and he filled us in on the whole scenario a couple of days later.

He said two guys from Animal Control came and wrestled the deer to the ground, at which point he (deer, not neighbor) became very compliant and stopped struggling.  They were able to cut him free and he bounded off into the distance.

Thus ends the story.  Sorry it wasn’t more interesting, but I am glad the deer lived.  To make up for the brief and unadorned ending to the tale, here’s a post-Bambi pic of our hammock and one of the scattered woodpile:

The hammock was actually originally hooked to a tree out of sight to the right of the photo, but that end (the one you see shredded and wrapped around the tree in the forefront) was the one the deer was caught in and it had been ripped loose from the get-go.

Believe it or not, the deer was flinging himself flipping and twisting over the woodpile, fighting like a fish on the end of a line.  I still can’t believe he didn’t break a leg.

  1. Thank goodness!
